Rising Beats Mondays 5-5.45pm
Children 7yrs+ and their adults.
Beginners welcome at any time.
Both adult and child can enjoy a meaningful, challenging, rewarding activity together with this 45 minute session. Warm-up games, rhythm skills, taiko drumming, movement, teamwork and fun. There will be time for you to work with just your child/ren, giving a new dynamic to your unique relationship. Some of our adult/child duos have been playing taiko with us for some years and now enjoy performing out in the community with us.

Big Beats Mondays 5.45-6.30pm
Children 9yrs+
Beginners welcome at any time.
Big drums, big energy and lots of fun. Taiko drumming can be great to increase confidence, social skills, communication and teamwork. 45 minutes of warm-up games, rhythm skills and learning taiko songs. There will be opportunities to perform with our community group throughout the year.

Community Class (Adults & under 16s with taiko experience)
Beginners welcome at any time.
Practice skills and learn a new taiko rhythm or song. Sessions will include a short warm-up, rhythm skills and learning a taiko rhythm or song. Have fun, spend meaningful time for yourself, meet people and learn something new. There will be opportunities to perform with our community group throughout the year.

Taiko Technic Mondays 7.15. - 8.15pm
Class (Adults & under 16s with taiko experience)
Some taiko or drumming experience recommended.
Learn a new song at a faster pace, and challenge yourself with new skills. Learning is supported by video and written notation so that you can practice at home.

Community Performance Class (Adults & under 16s with taiko experience)
Taiko experience needed.
Play-thorugh repertoire as a group. Happi Beats is the new name for Taiko Journey Collective - a community performance group. Playful, sociable taiko where everyone is included.

Meet the team
HJ Brunskill
Founder & Director
HJ has studied with global taiko pioneers, and connected with taiko groups around the world. She is passionate about taiko inspiring positive personal development and teaches with a spirit of adventure, awareness and compassion. HJ has spent a long time in SEND music education, and is a qualified Early Years music educator.
Ruth Janssen
Associate Session Lead
Ruth is a London Contemporary Dance School alum, danced and choreographed professionally for two decades, notably with Scottish Dance Theatre and working with many of the UK's leading dance artists and touring globally. After relocating to Devon and starting a family, she discovered a love for Taiko drumming, finding rhythm, community, and joy. A qualified yoga teacher, Ruth also leads Thula Mama groups and co-directs The Hall Exeter.
Sarah Mc Lintock
Associate Session Lead
Having previously danced American tribal style belly dance in a collective, Sarah loves the challenge and aesthetic of taiko’s rhythm and movement. Sarah has been playing taiko on and off since 2011 and had a couple of baby bumps along the way. Taiko is her happy place and is a key part of helping her to maintain good mental health.
Sarah is also a qualified teacher, with a passion for personal, social and health education.
Linda Cameron
Associate Session Lead
Having played taiko both in the UK and internationally, she has a natural stage-presence and exudes energy and joy in all her work. A former physiotherapist, Linda is now a Psychotherapeutic Counsellor, delivering training in Stress Management. Linda’s work as a psychosocial practitioner is proving to be a powerful element on the corporate team wellness work that Taiko journey offers.
